[2024]Byengdong Youn, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University, Receives Springer Nature “Editor of Distinction Awards 2025

The College of Engineering at Seoul National University has announced that Professor Byengdong Youn of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been selected as a recipient of the Editor of Distinction Awards 2025, hosted by the world-renowned academic publisher Springer Nature.

The Editor of Distinction Awards is an annual award program presented by Springer Nature to editors who lead its academic journals. It recognizes editors who have contributed to fostering the growth of the research community and building a high-quality academic ecosystem for both authors and readers.

Since 2017, Professor Youn has served as a Senior Review Editor for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (SMO), a prestigious international journal in the field of optimal design. His outstanding editorial work and dedication to the research community have earned him the Author Service Award.

Professor Youn has acted as a bridge connecting authors, readers, and the research community in the field of optimal design. In particular, he has made continuous efforts to maintain rigorous review standards, support authors, and provide academic direction for the journal. This award is regarded as international recognition of his contributions and achievements.

Professor Youn stated, “As an editor, I have strived to ensure that researchers’ valuable work is evaluated fairly and to promote active intellectual exchange among researchers. I am deeply honored that these efforts have been recognized, and I will continue to do my utmost to contribute to the sustainable growth of the academic community, including the field of optimal design.”

Professor Youn earned his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 2001 and has conducted research in industrial artificial intelligence, reliability-based analysis and design, and meta-structure analysis and design. From 2022 to 2024, he was named among the world’s top 2% of scientists each year, as announced by Stanford University and the global publisher Elsevier, earning recognition for his scholarly achievements.

As the founder and CEO of onepredict, Professor Youn has also served as a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and as a former president of the Korean Society of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM). He has been a technical advisory professor for major Korean corporations, including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Company, LG Electronics, LG Energy Solution, and SEMES. Currently, he is a Fellow of the PHM Society, a member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK), Chair of the Hyundai Motor Company Reliability Advisory Committee, and head professor of the PHM Joint Research Laboratory.

Professor Youn has received numerous awards, including the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award (2021), the Grand Prize from the Korean Reliability Society (2021), the Merit Award from the Korean PHM Society (2021), the Minister of SMEs and Startups Award (2021), the Prime Minister’s Commendation (2019), the Shinyang Academic Award from Seoul National University (2017), and the Young Faculty Development Award from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) (2009). He has also won 18 awards in global data challenge competitions. Over the past 25 years, he has published around 210 journal papers, presented more than 500 conference papers, and registered over 80 domestic and international patents.

To date, he has supervised 37 Ph.D. graduates, 36 master’s degree recipients, and 10 postdoctoral researchers. Notably, he has produced 16 professors at universities in Korea and abroad, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Rutgers University, the University of Maryland, College Park, and the University of Connecticut.
