S-OIL (010950) announced on the 4th that it is strengthening the competitiveness of its existing core businesses and uncovering new growth opportunities through strategic investments in venture companies with promising future technologies.
S-OIL has been paying close attention to technological shifts in future industries such as Industrial AI, energy, and batteries, strategically investing in promising venture firms. Post investment, the company continues to explore potential synergies with its existing business operations and discover new business opportunities tied to the technological and commercial growth of these investees.
Representative investment cases include industrial AI and predictive diagnostic solutions firm ONEPREDICT and next generation battery maker LiBest. S-OIL invested a total of 2 billion KRW in ONEPREDICT across two rounds in 2019 and 2020, and currently holds an approximate 5% equity stake in the company.
ONEPREDICT's AI powered predictive maintenance technology can forecast abnormal signs, failure risks, and remaining useful life (RUL) of critical machinery—such as rotating equipment, piping, and transformers—in oil refining and petrochemical plants well in advance.
S-OIL is leveraging this technology to ensure stable equipment operation, improve plant operating rates, reduce maintenance costs, and prevent unplanned downtime.
ONEPREDICT is accelerating its expansion in the industrial AI sector, recently selecting Mirae Asset Securities as its lead underwriter to pursue a tech special KOSDAQ listing in Q1 2027.
S-OIL also invested a total of 2.5 billion KRW in next generation battery manufacturer LiBest across 2019 and 2021, currently holding about a 6% equity stake. LiBest is developing next generation battery technology based on its flexible lithium ion battery manufacturing capabilities, and has recently begun partial mass production of high output, high energy density cells designed for aviation batteries.
An S-OIL official stated, "Venture investment is a strategic vehicle that goes beyond simple financial returns to proactively identify rapidly shifting industrial landscapes and future technologies, while discovering new business opportunities. We plan to continuously seek investment and collaboration opportunities with promising venture firms to boost our existing business competitiveness and secure technologies in high growth future sectors."
Meanwhile, S-OIL recorded a consolidated operating profit of 2.1961 trillion KRW and a net profit of 1.2356 trillion KRW in the first half of this year, turning profitable compared to the same period last year.
