By understanding the future condition of equipment, unexpected accidents can be prevented.

[Protection & Relay Team Engineer]
"Just knowing the current and future condition of our equipment through the solution gives us a sense of safety in the field."

01 Client

The client is a major petrochemical company in Korea, producing synthetic resins, raw materials, and synthetic rubber through large-scale chemical plants.

02 Background

The client has been continuously seeking ways to manage transformers to prevent serious industrial accidents that could not only halt plant operations but also cause injuries due to a single defect.

Although regular inspections are conducted monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually for safety, the large number of transformers to manage created challenges—not only with actual maintenance tasks but also with the heavy burden of documentation. In particular, analyzing dissolved gas values from inside the transformers using conventional methods was difficult, as multiple international standards and differing individual judgment criteria made it nearly impossible to accurately assess not only the future but even the current condition of the transformers.

For these reasons, the client began looking into predictive diagnostic solutions and considered adopting guardione® by onepredict, which had jointly developed a comprehensive substation preventive diagnostic system with KEPCO, Korea’s largest transformer operator. (* Related article: KEPCO launches Phase 2 of AI-based Substation Preventive Diagnostic System Development)

03 Issue

The client initially applied guardione® substation to select transformers and managed them based on diagnostic and predictive insights about equipment condition.

1. Provided not only guardione®’s proprietary diagnostic results but also results aligned with international standards such as IEC and IEEE

2. Easily tracked transformer inspection history on a monthly and yearly basis via the guardione® dashboard

3. Reviewed equipment-specific detailed diagnostic reports to identify trends up to five years into the future

04 Result

Thanks to the guardione® solution delivering a satisfying experience for the client, the number of monitored units increased from 13 to 60 upon contract renewal. The client plans to continue using the guardione® solution to prioritize on-site safety and proactively prevent unexpected accidents.

1. Using guardione®, the client efficiently plans maintenance and replacement schedules by predicting transformer condition and potential failure timing, optimizing both cost and resource management.

2. Diagnostic reports and equipment history management features have minimized unnecessary documentation.

3. Continuous solution maintenance and support are being provided through version upgrades of guardione® substation.
